Using The Body Mass Index As a Safe And Effective Tool To Maintain Ones Health

Most of us have probably encountered the term "Body mass index" in some point in our lives. But do we really know what a body mass index is for? Are most of us even aware on how to use a body mass index? Does any one of us really know the importance on how a body mass index may help us? I've taken the liberty of researching what a body mass index is and decided to write about it.

An individual’s body mass index measures his height and weight ratio. The formula goes this way. You weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in meters. The body mass index is primarily designed as a statistical tool, designed for public studies, where investigation and comparison of data taken from individuals in the form of their weight and height. It should be noted that the body mass index serves as an estimate of an individual’s body weight proportion. Due to the routine recording of data, namely weight and height, in a variety of investigations and across many countries, the body mass index may never grow obsolete. Because of the flexibility of this tool, the body mass index has provided health statisticians a very broad overview of the correlations between overweight and health stress.

The body mass index has been used to measure and define the standards of measurement for obesity, a condition among young and old individuals alike that is greatly becoming a health risk. He body mass index was once mainly used only by the world health organization. But in the late 1990's and 2000's the body mass index was slowly becoming popular to the public through government sponsored public health projects that are intended to encourage everyone to be a lot fitter and eat healthier foods.

Despite the limits of what the body mass index can do for an individual, modern medicine tend to promote the body mass index as a "rule of thumb" guide for an individual who is seeking his optimum weight that is proportional with his height. But because of the body mass index’s easy usage at home, some individual’s may become confused as to what their optimum weight should be. So it is greatly advised that and individual should be assisted by a health professional in determining his optimum weight when using a body mass index. Body mass index calculations are not just for adults, they can also be used to identify the growing number of overweight children. Body mass index calculations for children with ages ranging from two to twenty years of age are done the same way as of adults but is classified differently. Instead of basing from being overweight or underweight as important, it is their body mass index percentile that is important. Children who are below a 5 percent ranking are considered as underweight, while those above ninety-five percent are considered as overweight.

The body mass index is a great tool in determining and maintaining an individuals optimal weight. By constantly using the body mass index for both children and adults, a safe and healthy weight can be maintained.
